On the surface, Portland’s Green Drop Garage appears like any other garage, but underneath is is much more.

The garage specializes in converting diesel engines to run on vegetable oil, and accepts trades as payment.

But for owner Farhad Ghafarzade, the difference he wants customers to recognize in his shop has never been the aesthetics. It’s about the experience. He knows how intimidating it can be for the automotively illiterate to bring their vehicle someplace for service – in a lot of cases, the perception is that it’s an invitation to be ripped off. Ghafarzade wants to alleviate those fears, and he does so through methods that can be described only as Very Portland: offering free oil changes in exchange for vinyl records, craft-brewed beers and homemade food; giving out loaner bicycles rather than cars; throwing concerts and parties in the garage; and, most significantly, converting diesel engines to run on vegetable oil.
