Garmin to create jobs at new Salem call center


Salem-based satellite navigation company Garmin AT is set to expand its operations and increase its work force by as many as 200.

Salem-based satellite navigation company Garmin AT is set to expand its operations and hire 25-50 people before the holidays.

Garmin currently employs about 230 people and hopes to hire about 200 more.

Garmin has not said where the new facility will be but indicated that it will build a 43,000-square-foot facility by late January “about three miles away from Salem airport.”

Because the holiday season is the busiest time of year for the company — when consumers are buying more Garmin products — the company will hire 25 to 50 people to work at the temporary site, [general manager Gloria] Sukraw said. Those employees would move to the new building when it’s finished, she said, and more employees will be added after the first of the year, Sukraw said.
