Oregon’s share of the Treasury Department’s $105 million for struggling communities went to Portland, with no money for rural areas.
Oregon received $1.64 million of the total $105 million that the U.S. Treasury Department gave out to financial institutions serving struggling communities.
All of the Oregon money went to four Portland-based organizations, with no money going to rural Oregon despite high unemployment rates in those areas.
There was nothing for Bend, where one in seven workers is jobless, or Josephine County with its 13.9 percent unemployment rate or Medford, where unemployment has plateaued above 12 percent. The most recent figures for the Portland area put its unemployment rate at 10 percent.
Albina Opportunities Corp. of Portland received $97,420; Network for Oregon Affordable Housing of Portland received $750,000; Oregon Microenterprise Network, based in Portland, was awarded $46,470; and Portland Housing Center received $750,000.
