This year, Oregon will receive $1 million of federal funding to protect against unjustifiable health insurance premium increases.
The money will be used to increase scrutiny of premium increases and require disclosure of more information about health insurance companies.
“We’re excited about the prospects of having money to do these projects,” said Cheryl Martinis, a spokeswoman for the Oregon Insurance Division. Oregon expects to receive further awards over the next five years, but the amount is uncertain.
It remains to be seen whether stepped-up regulation can make health insurance more affordable. Insurance companies assert that what drives up premiums is the rising costs of hospital and physician services, diagnostic tests and new pharmaceuticals.
