Gillnetters, sports fishermen, weigh in on ODFW’s surprise fisheries decision


The Oregon commission voted 4-3  to extend gillnet fishing into the summer and fall along the Columbia River.

The decision renders moot a Washington-Oregon plan fish management plan crafted five years ago would have phased out gillnets on the Columbia. It also sparked outrage among sports fishermen and created a regulatory nightmare for Washington Fish and Wildlife officials, who now have to consider a King Solomon-like splitting of the the Columbia river.

Gillnetters, on the other hand, were thrilled.
