Openings and Closings
Collins Management Corp. is closing its Boardman plant. In total, 67 employees will lose their jobs. The plant manufactured exterior siding and particleboard. The facility will close September 19. Collins operates six other facilities in Washington and Oregon.
A Portland nonprofit has shuttered its doors. Idealist, a nonprofit that connects people with opportunities for social change, closed its office last week. Two dozen employees were laid off as a result. Idealist founder Ami Dar said it was a mistake to expand geographically so early after opening. The organization is headquartered in New York.
DeskHub, a coworking space in Portland’s Pearl district, has closed. The Arizona offshoot was located in the former Ziba Design headquarters, boasting 18,000-square-feet of office space. DeskHub leased the space last year for seven years. There’s been no comment as to why the coworking space has closed.
The Oregon Manufacturing Extension Partnership has opened a second location in Eugene. OMEP is a nonprofit which helps manufacturers be innovative. To head its southern Willamette Valley consulting team, the organization has also hired Mary Craighead.
Bend’s 10 Barrel Brewing Co. is opening a third location, this time in Denver, with plans for a fourth in San Diego. Expansion is part of the brewer’s plan since it was acquired by Anheuser-Busch in 2014.
Revolving Door
Portland Community College has hired a new president. Mark Mitsui will be the college’s seventh president as of August 29. Mitsui will replace Sylvia Kelley, PCC’s executive vice president, who has served as interim president since Jeremy Brown left last May. Mitsui has a background with the U.S. Department of Education, where he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Community Colleges.
Hermiston-native Daniel Buck has returned home as an emergency room physician for Good Shepherd Health Care System. Buck recently completed his Family Medicine Residency in Kentucky. He says Hermiston looks just as he remembers it.
