Bend, La Pine consider marijuana tax

La Pine council voted to put a marijuana ban and tax on the November ballot; Bend council to consider cannabis tax.
La Pine City Council voted in favor of a ban and tax on recreational cannabis retailers, Wednesday.
The ban would not affect the medical marijuana industry.
The tax would be up to 3 percent on sales made by recreational retail shops should the ban fail in November — unless both ordinances are voted down.
The vote on both ordinances will be open only to the approximately 1,700 residents of the city.

Bend City Council also voted Wednesday on a 3% recreational marijuana tax intended “to help close a $1 million road-funding gap looming in summer 2017,” according to the Bend Bulletin.
“Let’s just put (the cannabis tax) on the ballot; it’s like found money,” said Budget Committee Chair Peter Werner, who also led a PAC in favor of the fuel tax. “People buying dope, it’s just lining our pockets.”
Chudowsky cautioned that when he has floated the idea of a marijuana tax, it has not been well received by the community.
