For the approximately $100 million foundation, the goal is to help create what foundation President and CEO Denis Hayes says is an integrated metropolitan region that operates in ways that promote human health and social equity.

The Pacific Northwest is the place to do this, and the need is urgent, Hayes said in an interview at the Bullitt Center, a super-green building on Seattle’s Capitol Hill. Despite the Puget Sound region’s relatively small population, many people around the world know at least a little bit about it. This is partly because of companies, such as Amazon.com, Boeing and Microsoft, and partly because of the region’s natural splendor.
