City Council faces opposition re sale of Eugene’s Broadway Plaza


Dozens of people took to City Council to oppose the proposed sale of the beloved Broadway Plaza in downtown Eugene.

The speakers said a public space that honors free expression and provides no-cost space for events, music and dancing is a vital element of downtown, and asserted that the sale of Kesey Square would gentrify the area by pushing out low-income residents and the homeless.

…Some said the plaza needs public improvements and more programs and events, but every speaker agreed that developing the space into a six-story mixed-use building is a step too far.
