Barran Liebman is proud to announce that Andrew Schpak, a Partner of the firm, has been named Chair of the American Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division for the 2014-2015 bar year. As Chair, Schpak is responsible for overseeing the nation’s largest network of young lawyers—a group that comprises over 130,000 young attorneys from across the country.
Schpak, who officially became Chair at the ABA Annual Meeting this past week in Boston, has been a member of the ABA YLD since 2005. He began to get more involved in 2006 when he organized social events for a conference that took place in Portland. He went on to hold several different positions in the YLD, including Liaison to the Senior Lawyers Division, District Representative of Oregon and Washington, and Conferences, Programs and Products Director. For his work in these last two positions, the Division honored Andrew with back-to-back "Star of the Year" Awards in 2011 and 2012.
As Chair, he is tasked with planning continuing education and professional development programs, including the upcoming ABA YLD Fall Conference, which will be held in Portland. He is also dedicated to creating opportunities for public service and self-improvement throughout the bar year. One such opportunity is the YLD’s 2014-2015 national service project, Project Street Youth: Young Lawyers Advocating for Homeless Youth. For this project, the YLD is partnering with Center on Children and the Law and the Commission on Homelessness and Poverty to provide a legal services clinic toolkit to help homeless youth with credit and consumer issues, public assistance and government benefits, and tickets, warrants and other minor criminal matters.
Schpak is excited about his tenure as chair and the opportunities it affords to improve the experiences of fellow young lawyers. “I am looking forward to serving as Chair because it will give me the opportunity to help shape the ABA YLD’s message and ensure that we are maximizing the benefits we deliver to young lawyers around the world,” says Schpak. “My goal is to use the ABA YLD to help make young lawyers better lawyers, better leaders, and better people.”
