New Year, New Boards: Barran Liebman Attorneys Make A Difference


Barran Liebman attorneys are excited that 2014 brings new board positions and increasing leadership roles for many of their attorneys. Over the next year, here are a few of the ways their attorneys will be making a difference.

Rose VillaTodd Lyon has been elected as the President of Rose Villa Foundation, Inc. The Foundation, where Todd has served as a board member since 2009, was established in 1962 as a not-for-profit whose sole purpose is to provide for the financial security of Rose Villa residents. Rose Villa is a continuing care retirement community located in South East Portland. Todd is excited to assist the Foundation’s campaign to increase its endowment from $3.6M to $8M and provide for peace of mind to those residents in need.

 

ABAAndrew Schpak will become chair of the American Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division in August of 2014. He first became involved with the ABA YLD by organizing social events for an ABA YLD conference that took place in Portland in 2006, and he has held a number of different positions since. “I am looking forward to serving as Chair because it will give me the opportunity to help shape the ABA YLD’s message and ensure that we are maximizing the benefits we deliver to young lawyers around the world,” says Schpak. “My goal is to use the ABA YLD to help make young attorneys better lawyers, better leaders, and better people.” He hopes to accomplish that goal through continuing education and professional development programs, and through opportunities for public service and self-improvement throughout the bar year.

 

Latino NetworkJosé Klein begins 2014 as a new member of the Latino Network Board of Directors. The Latino Network is a non-profit organization founded in 1996 to provide transformative opportunities, services, and advocacy for the education, leadership and civic engagement of Latino youth, families and communities in Multnomah County. Through a variety of programs, the Latino Network aims to empower community members to participate meaningfully in the decisions that affect their lives and the lives of their families.

 

OWLsIn April of 2014, Iris Tilley will join the Oregon Women Lawyers Board of Directors. OWLS, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2014, is Oregon’s statewide women’s bar group, devoted to transforming the practice of law and ensuring justice and equality by advancing women and minorities in the legal profession. Tilley, who has been a member of OWLS for several years now, is excited to get more involved with the programs and direction of the organization.

 

PHRMAKyle Abraham will serve on the Portland Human Resource Management Association’s Board in the role of Legislative Affairs Director. PHRMA is the area’s premium professional association for individuals who work in the human resources field. Abraham says he choose to serve on the PHRMA Board as Legislative Affairs Director “to encourage HR professionals to take an active role in the legislative process, and to inform HR professional about how emerging laws will likely impact local business.”

 

MBAAlso in 2014, Amy Angel will join the Multnomah Bar Foundation Board. The mission of the MBF is to increase the public’s understanding of the legal system, to promote civic education, public participation and respect for the law, to improve the quality and administration of the legal system, and to support programs and projects related to the MBF’s purpose. Angel is already familiar with the work of the Multnomah Bar Foundation; she is the current chair of the Campaign Committee for Multnomah CourtCare, one of the funds administered and supported by the MBF.

 

OSBFinally, Traci Ray has been appointed to the Oregon Law Foundation Board of Directors. The Oregon Law Foundation is the charitable arm of the Oregon State Bar, and its primary mission is to raise funds for organizations that help the poor obtain access to legal services. Since 1989, the Oregon Law Foundation has awarded over $28,000,000 for charitable, law related purposes. Ray was appointed by the Oregon State Bar Board of Governors, and looks forward to helping further the OLF’s mission over the course of her four year term.
