Readers want to have their cake and eat it, too. About one-third of poll respondents consider climate change a serious problem; most also favor hydraulic fracturing, an environmentally damaging form of natural gas extraction. Almost half believe Oregon should increase the number of trains carrying crude oil through the Portland metro region; 72% want to amp up fuel-efficiency standards for cars and trucks. Perhaps these contradictory — or, rather, expansive — attitudes reflect the transitional nature of our economy: headed in a green direction but still rooted in fossil fuels.
