5 reasons PDX is still the best

Ho hum. PDX is named the country’s best domestic airport — again.

The first time I flew to PDX I was stunned. I came from Boise, where the entire airport could fit in Portland’s parking structure. I was shocked and awed by all the terminals. Now that I’ve spent hours flying to and from PDX, I’m not surprised voters consistently prefer flying from Portland over other airports.

For the fourth year, PDX was named the best domestic airport by Travel & Leisure magazine. It’s certainly become a bit of a joke for Portlanders who don’t think twice about the amenities offered at PDX and the efficiency of the TSA agents. But consider the ranking with a bit of perspective.

Travel & Leisure writes: “In addition to its navigability, PDX boasts an admirable on-time departure record — this airport is truly an extension of the city. You can order Middle Eastern fare from Aybla Grill and buy socks, bike helmets, and even yoga mats sporting the pattern found on the unforgettable carpet lining the terminals.”

In honor of our beloved airport, here are five reasons PDX is still the best.

 5. Navigation = easy

Portland’s airport is easy to navigate. Travel & Leisure reports PDX is so pleasant, pilots and flight attendants enjoy working here as well.

Ontime departures are also worth a mention here. Fivethirtyeight ranked Portland No. 2 for speed and efficiency.

4. Free WiFi

While many airports now offer free WiFi — it’s a no-brainer in our digital world — Portland’s WiFi ranks higher than most. It can even handle streaming Netfilx while you’re waiting for a flight. You know: It’s the little things.

3. Most feet photographed

Let us not forget PDX’s beloved carpet pattern, replaced just last year, much to flyers’ dismay. The carpet sparked a phenomenon [including its own Twitter and Facebook pages], and a new pattern for magnets, key chains, mugs and clothing.

2. Public transit

Trimet’s red line light rail makes an easy journey to and from PDX. The train arrives just outside the terminal entrance in a mere 40 minutes from downtown Portland. In traffic, that’s faster than talking your friend into a ride or taking Uber.

1. The food

Many likely expect that Portland’s airport would provide a medley of local food. We’re a city that loves Country Cat’s fried chicken, food carts and sandwiches from Kenny and Zuke’s Delicatessen. Access to these local favorites make the airport feel like home.
