SeaPort Airlines flights between Astoria and Portland have failed to take off, with some flights being cancelled because of a lack of passengers.

The airline, subsidized by a $4.5 million state grant, has had better success with flights to Newport.

Newport officials have begun questioning whether Astoria should cancel the third flight from Portland to save grant money or transfer that flight to Newport.

“We’re looking for ways to make the service more robust in all its aspects, including Astoria,” said Newport Mayor Bill Bain. “No one wants to kill service that has a good chance of success. What we want to do is raise the question: Should we be more concerned or pay more attention or should we give it a little longer?”
