Ballot summaries spark concern

A panel of legislators will try to avoid bias when approving summaries on tax measures.

An uneven panel has some worried that the ballot summaries approved by the panel on two business-tax measures will be biased.

A panel of six lawmakers — four Democrats and two Republicans — will meet this week at the Capitol to hear from the public and approve ballot titles and explanations for the measures. There will be draft language posted Monday on the Legislature’s Web site.

Some critics are saying in advance of the hearing that the deck is stacked and the language of the ballot titles and explanations will be tailored against their side.
