Jobless overwhelm system

An overload of Oregonians trying to file claims last weekend caused the system to crash.

Oregon’s extension of emergency unemployment pay created a surge of people trying to file claims with the Oregon Employment Department, causing the system to crash Sunday.

The computer system was working by mid-day Monday, so most people should be able to file claims and get their weekly unemployment checks on time, said Craig Spivey, spokesman for the department. However, some may not be able to get online through the Internet until Tuesday, he said, in which case their checks will arrive a day later than usual.

The agency expected to resolve its telephone problem by Wednesday.
