Universities, unions reach agreement


State universities and unions reached an agreement that includes pay freezes and furloughs.

A labor agreement between state university officials and union representatives includes mandatory unpaid furlough days and pay-raise limits. The contract affects 4,000 unionized Oregon employees, including 1,400 at the University of Oregon.

The pay freeze provides for no step increases for the first year of the contract and no cost of living adjustments for the two-year contract length. Step increases are largely automatic pay hikes that are given the longer an employee stays in a particular job.

Rick Hampton, director of labor relations for the state university system, said the unpaid days off and the raise restrictions are an unpleasant necessity.
