Surface mines in Columbia County see rock removal fall 24 percent.
The mining industry isn’t recession-proof either; the amount of rock removed from Columbia County’s 25 surface mines was the lowest since 2002.
Land Development Services Director Todd Dugdale said demand increases and decreases each year depending on the kinds of projects that are out there. Use increases if more road projects – which require more rock than site construction projects – are in the works.
But Dugdale said he has noticed a decline since last year.
