Tillamook County business and civic leaders are creating plans to transition the area’s economy from one based on logging and fishing to one that embraces and promotes ecotourism. A late-April event sponsored by the Economic Development Council of Tillamook County focused on the untapped potential of the region’s five major estuaries and the breadth of nature-based tourism activities in Tillamook. In five years, predicts event organizer Marc Hinz, “Tillamook will be the Hood River of kayaking.” Plans include mapping the natural water system and improving critical infrastructure needs such as cell-phone coverage and launch sites.  Until now, Hinz says, there has been no economic development plan for the county. Hood River, watch out.
