Advocates say experience gives older workers an edge – and employers should take notice.

The number of unemployed workers over age 55 in June doubled from the previous year. Yet advocates say older job seekers should market the experience they have over their younger competitors.

…At the same time, advocates are urging employers to consider older workers as viable job candidates and are marketing their qualifications: loyalty to the job, maturity and work ethic.

“The experience that people have at 50-plus nationally is they just have a longer job search,” said Joyce DeMonnin, a spokeswoman for AARP Oregon. “We know there’s age discrimination out in the workplace — it’s just really, really hard to fight it.”
