ROSEBURG — Take this story with a grain of salt. In 2001, the husband-and-wife team of Ed and Ingrid Leach became believers in the curative powers of salt after reading Water and Salt, The Essence of Life, a German book extolling the essential mineral.

Leach says that after reading the book he had a “profound” awakening, and spent six months getting it translated into English. In 2003, the book was published, and the Leaches made the Himalayan crystal salt lionized in the book available through their retail website, American BlueGreen.

The salt recently was named one of the top 10 eco-lifestyle products by PureZing.com, a Web directory of health products. The Himalayan crystal costs about $30 for two pounds and can also be used for cooking and bathing.

Finally, a product worth its salt.
