NW full of energy promise


Experts say the Northwest has great potential for energy resources for the U.S. and Canada.

The Pacific Northwest could be a significant region for solar, biothermal and other alternative sources. The trick is finding the balance between fossil fuels and nuclear power, and greener technologies.

“We are tremendously blessed with energy resources of all kinds here in the Pacific Northwest region. The question is how will we decide to optimize those,” Roger Woodworth, vice president of Avista Corp., said during this week’s Pacific NorthWest Economic Region’s annual conference.

Energy issues are the focus of this year’s four-day summit, attended by more than 500 government officials, energy experts and researchers from Idaho, Montana, Washington, Oregon, Alaska and four Canadian provinces. For decades, the region has been a hub for energy sources such as oil, natural gas, coal, uranium and hydropower.
