THE COAST In a move that surprised no one, a federal panel in April completely shut down this year’s commercial ocean Chinook salmon season, and placed massive limits on the Coho catch. A day later, Oregon U.S. senators Ron Wyden and Gordon Smith sent a joint letter to the Commerce Department asking the agency to declare a “fishery failure,” which would allow Congress to provide disaster assistance. “This year’s salmon season will be the most restrictive in West Coast history, and will have an extremely negative impact on recreational and commercial fishermen and supporting businesses up and down our coastline,” the senators wrote.
