Repairs could get the rail line between Coquille and Eugene back on track.
The 60-mile rail line could finally see repairs after its 2007 closure; the Oregon International Port of Coos Bay hopes to secure a deal with a Tillamook construction company in the next couple of weeks.
That the restoration of four tunnels will soon be under way is welcome news to the major employers that have had to ship their wood and steel products by truck since the line went down. But the critical transportation corridor is a long way — and a large amount of cash — away from being back in service again.
The port, which purchased the line earlier this year after an application to the federal Surface Transportation Board, secured $2.5 million in federal stimulus money to fix the most pressing of the railroad’s repair issues.
