The poor economy is affecting Pendleton Woolen Mills, which has just announced it will be making cuts and other changes. The textile company said sales have slowed so it has to lay off employees and cut pay for higher wage-earners.

Pendleton Woolen Mills, Oregon’s iconic textiles manufacturer, announced plans Wednesday to consolidate operations and whittle costs as it adjusts to sluggish consumer demand worldwide.

The 100-year-old company, whose colorful woven blankets have gained a global reputation, will lay off 43 workers permanently, many of them at its mill in Pendleton, the eastern Oregon city for which it is named.
