Taxes under fire


When it comes to taxes, it’s not over until it’s over.

Oregon legislators passed several taxes and budget measures this session, and many groups are displeased with the outcome. But the future of those taxes is yet to be seen as it may be affected by voter initiative.

Lawmakers’ actions affecting the economy this session are frequently viewed through the prism of the major budget-balancing tax increases.

On one side are people such as Chuck Sheketoff, the executive director of Oregon Center for Public Policy in Silverton, who argues that the increases on profitable corporations and higher-income households tilt the balance away from individuals and minimize cuts to vital services such as education, health care and human services that people depend on.
