Springfield Creamery in Eugene is going green by investing in solar energy.
The creamery that makes Nancy’s Yogurt is pursuing solar energy with the help of tax credits and grants. It hopes to use the energy itself instead of selling it to EWEB and buying it back.
“It makes good economic sense, and in this era of reducing resource use, it’s the right thing to do,” Sue Kesey, co-founder of the family business, said Thursday.
The $500,000 project features 135 photovoltaic roof panels and generates 63.5 kilowatts at the company’s plant on Airport Road. That initial cost, financed by Key Bank, is offset by state and federal tax credits, depreciation and a $25,000 grant from Eugene Water & Electric Board. After eight to 10 years, the project’s net cost will be about $7,100, Kesey said.
