Portland’s farmers’ markets are seeing more traffic this season.

Not only are more people visiting farmers’ markets this year, but those people are also making more purchases. The increase in traffic is probably due to the recession.

Business is down just about everywhere this year, but not at Portland’s farmers markets.

And a significant portion of that business comes from a relatively new group of visitors – people who are receiving government food assistance.

Though the markets are often viewed as boutique shopping, with an emphasis on quality rather than price, attendance at the markets is up across the Portland area.
