Two teachers are an example of those who’ve lost their jobs.

School districts across Oregon continue to make cuts, and that means many teachers are set to lose their jobs. The Oregon Education Association has a list of more than 500 layoffs in the Portland area alone. Steve and Connie Rice are two of those teachers who will not be returning next school year.

Rice is a veteran teacher but is in only his second year at the Tigard-Tualatin School District, which means he is among the first teachers to go as the district cuts its budget. Rice and at least 70 other teachers learned last month they will not have jobs next school year.

Hundreds of teachers across Oregon won’t return to their classrooms this fall. In the Portland area, the Oregon Education Association has a list of at least 500 layoffs. But the numbers remain uncertain as districts negotiate with teacher unions on salaries and get more concrete state funding figures.

The result likely will be larger class sizes and fewer programs, especially electives such as music.
