McMinnville-based Evergreen International Airlines Inc. pilots are prepared to strike if they don’t receive a pay raise.

The pilots have been negotiating since 2005 without a contract.

Evergreen pilots operate a fleet of 10 Boeing 747 cargo planes that fly around the world, carrying U.S. military supplies from New York to the Middle East and continuing to China, where they pick up goods for export to the United States. [Union spokesman Dean] Kidd, an Evergreen captain since 1996, said the freighters sometimes land in Afghanistan — at Kabul, Kandahar and Bagram Air Base.

“The company gives us nothing extra to fly in and out of those places,” Kidd said. Pilots for other cargo companies get extra pay for landing in war zones, he said.
