Many crab fishermen didn’t set their pots out over the weekend in time to pull them up on the Wednesday season start date already set by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Furman said.
“We like it a lot better when there’s an agreed-upon price before getting gear set,” he said.
John Corbin, commissioner with the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission and president of the Astoria Crab Marketing Association, said fishermen have stayed home to see if questions about crab quality and meat fill can be answered. The delay could last as long as two weeks, until they’re confident that the product is plump and satisfying for consumers, he added.
