Cowlitz County commissioners have postponed the decision for a new coal export terminal in Longview until next week.

Thw proposal has infuriated environmental groups working to phase out the burning of coal.

Millennium CEO Joe Cannon says the facility would create about 70 permanent jobs and generate $1.5 million in state and local tax revenues annually, double that during 12 to 18 months of construction. The coal would come from the Powder River Basin in Montana and Wyoming — relatively low in mercury and acid-rain causing sulfur dioxide, Cannon noted — and would help meet fast-growing demand in Asia, particularly in China.

Millennium is asking the commissioners to approve shoreline development permits required for the company’s planned improvements, including dock repairs, dust control equipment, and a 525,000-square-foot stockpile area to store about 300,000 metric tons of coal.
