Target Corp. is looking into downtown Portland locations, and the Galleria building at SW Alder Street and 10th Avenue is an early favorite.

Mayor Sam Adams is recruiting the retailer.

“We are interested in bringing Target to the area but have no specific details to share at this time,” said Target spokeswoman Jenn Glass. “We’re excited about the possibilities. Portland is a place where our suburban stores have done very well.”

Luring one of the country’s largest retailers to downtown would be significant for a district battered by recession, transit-mall construction and image issues. Some downtown retailers have blasted the city for allowing panhandlers and street kids to scare off shoppers. Saks closed its downtown stores earlier this year, vacating about 83,000 square feet
