Treasurer Ted Wheeler overhauls travel policies at his agency in response to newspaper investigation.
Oregon Treasurer Ted Wheeler updated his agency’s travel policies after an investigation by The Oregonian found state investment officers to travel in luxury and exceed spending limits.
The policies changed included no more booking first-class travel and no more per-diem meal claims when meals were already provided.
Wheeler made a number of immediate policy changes in response to the newspaper’s findings. He also asked for an outside review of investment officer expense claims by the secretary of state, and appointed a citizen’s advisory panel to provide input on proposed policy changes developed by the agency.
The auditors delivered their review earlier this month, and Wheeler said he is in the process of instituting policy changes vetted by the citizen’s panel and designed to ensure more transparency, consistency and accountability.
