Stores in Eugene’s Whiteaker neighborhood are halting the sale of cheap liquor favored by alcoholic transients.

Store owners have agreed to stop selling high alcohol content cheap liquor that is favored by alcoholic transients.

The merchants hope the ban will reduce public drunkenness and related crimes, and lead to improvement in the communities.

Authorities praised the store owners for halting the sale of such malt liquors as Steel Reserve, Hurricane High Gravity, Joose and Four Loco.

“It takes guts to say, ‘OK, I’m not going to sell this product that is making me money,’ ” Eugene police Sgt. Terry Fitzpatrick said.
