As Google prepares to launch a new fiber-optic network, Portland officials are preparing to ask the search-engine giant to invest in the Rose City.

Google says the network will provide internet connections 100 times faster than current broadband connections.

…The network will be open, Google said, so multiple companies could use it to deliver Web access, phone service and video.

Google invited cities across the country to apply for the project, by a March 26 deadline, but left key details vague — like whether it plans to build one big network, or several smaller ones.
