While not as hard-hit as other industries, Oregon agriculture is seeing a workforce drop.
Oregon’s agriculture industry saw a 2.2% year-over-year drop in the second quarter of 2009.
While the drop isn’t as severe as in other industries, agriculture workers are finding it increasingly difficult to find work in their specialized fields.
“There’s not much work out there doing anything,” [former ranch worker John Moyer] said. “We’ve been looking around, but there’s just not that much work.”
Moyer has thus joined an apparently growing number of agricultural workers finding it unusually difficult to find new employment in the trades they know. While accurate counts remain elusive, evidence suggests large numbers of unemployed workers who may not return to agriculture.
