The thousands of Census-taker jobs being created include 3,000 jobs in the Portland area.
The U.S. Census Bureau will bring about 7,500 jobs to Oregon for its once-a-decade count, including 3,000 in the Portland area.
The jobs are certainly welcome given the state’s still-high unemployment rates. Expected to last six to eight weeks, positions are expected to pay between $15.25 and $18.25 per hour.
Most of the jobs start in March and run until late June, but applications are already being accepted for the positions. Statewide, about 7,500 Census jobs will be filled through five offices, including Portland and Beaverton. Nationally, more than 800,000 temporary workers will be hired to conduct the 2010 Census.
Critics of past censuses claimed that minorities and immigrants were undercounted, especially in urban neighborhoods. In the heart of a raging recession and many families doubling up in the homes of relatives and friends, they say getting an accurate count this time around could be even more difficult.
