We kicked off the festivities with a networking reception

IMG 1255“I’m in awe of your companies,” said OPB Morning Edition host  and emcee Geoff Norcross. “Some of you even pay your bike commuters.”

IMG 1259Keynote speaker Jacqueline Drumheller, Alaska Airlines’ sustainability manager, talked about how to build a sustainability program from scratch.

Airlines burn through 1 million disposable cups every six hours and countless gallons of fuel. Under Drumheller’s leadership, Alaska cut passenger waste by half, implemented sustainability metrics and reporting and began green business practices by cutting fossil fuel use.

Companies starting on a sustainability path, “might not feel like you’re getting traction now,” Drumheller said. “But in 10 years you’ll look back and be proud of what you’ve done”
