Highlights from our tenth annual 100 Best Green Workplaces in Oregon awards luncheon.
Oregon Business honored the 2018 100 Best Green Workplaces in Oregon this afternoon at The Nines Hotel in Portland.
We kicked off the festivities with a networking reception
“I’m in awe of your companies,” said OPB Morning Edition host and emcee Geoff Norcross. “Some of you even pay your bike commuters.”
Keynote speaker Jacqueline Drumheller, Alaska Airlines’ sustainability manager, talked about how to build a sustainability program from scratch.
Airlines burn through 1 million disposable cups every six hours and countless gallons of fuel. Under Drumheller’s leadership, Alaska cut passenger waste by half, implemented sustainability metrics and reporting and began green business practices by cutting fossil fuel use.
Companies starting on a sustainability path, “might not feel like you’re getting traction now,” Drumheller said. “But in 10 years you’ll look back and be proud of what you’ve done”
Our No. 3 Best Green Workplace award went to Green Drop Garage.
Second place went to AJ’s Auto Repair
The No. 1 Best Green workplace in Oregon award went to Research Into Action, a nonprofit clean energy practices group that offers a bike commuting bonus and comprehensive recycling program.
A “Hacking the Green Workplace” panel discussion preceded the luncheon. Hopworks Urban Brewery founder Christian Ettinger, Daimler NA facilities manager Matt Markstaller, and Jordan Folks from Research Into Action shared tips and stories about how to implement sustainable practices in the office.
