Another idea submitted in time for Portland Mayor Sam Adams’ proposal deadline features a community recreation center, all part of an effort to breathe new life into the Coliseum and the surrounding area.
This particular moment in Rose Quarter history stems directly from the City Council’s decision last year to tear down the aging Memorial Coliseum for a baseball stadium. Architects and veterans groups objected, prompting Adams to opt for a public brainstorm on what to do with the city-owned building instead.
Until now, the desire to develop the coliseum and the surrounding area has limped along for years. The Blazers play at the Rose Garden arena and the Winterhawks at the coliseum, but most of the time, the Rose Quarter is dead during the day, blocked off by the freeway and stymied by city waffling.
